Currently there is a great interest in luminescent materials that can be used as potential biomarkers in order to obtain high contrast biological images. Within these materials the NaYF4: Yb3+, Tm3+ appears as a high efficiently material in emissions in the range of 450 nm to 500 nm. These emissions are due to the upconversion phenomenon, which occurs when 980 nm radiation hits these nanoparticles and when there is an energy transfer from the absorbent Yb3+ ion to the Tm3+ emitter ion. In this work, we report the synthesis of NaYF4 nanoparticles doped with Yb3+, Tm3+ rare earth ions using the solvothermal method. These nanoparticles have been synthesized successfully varying the concentration of Tm3+, considering 0.5%; 1%; 1.5% and 2% of Tm3+ that replace Y ions. The obtained nanoparticles are of the order of 20 nm. In order to study the emission of these nanoparticles in the range of visible wavelengths seeking to improve their efficiency in emissions around 480 nm, these particles were characterized using emission, absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy showing a higher emission by upconversion efficiency for concentrations of 1% in Tm3+ excited by a 980 nm laser diode. Also, we report results obtained in the characterization of this material using X-ray diffraction, verifying the presence of the α and β phases of NaYF4. The characterization by transmission electron microscopy allows to observe the crystalline character of the samples, which are gathered with an average size of 100 nm.
