In the current thesis, the hydrodynamic and sedimentological characterization of the Madre de Dios River (La Pastora) is described, a pronounced curve that has generated the interest of several researchers in our country. Thanks to the existing studies (bathymetry and geology, mainly) and through new measurements contemplated in the research, the purpose of the semipermeable spikes implemented is verified. According to the evaluation carried out in April and August of 2017 (times of flood and drought respectively), the behavior of the flow is variable. On one hand, the maximum flows in low stage are 60% from high stage, while the maximum secondary flows are in 20 to 50% respectively. In addition, in sections between breakwaters, the maximum flows are concentrated in the area of high depths, coinciding also with the appearance of upwelling areas at the bottom of the channel where secondary flows are greater. In relation to the suspended sediments, both the average diameters and the concentrations have an unstable behavior in the measurement campaigns; for the case of the diameters, these vary ± 5% while the concentrations decrease up to 80%. Likewise, bottom sediments show the presence of sands and fines in zones of high and low flows respectively, while the shores coincide with the information of the existing studies (pits). Finally, from the comparison of the bathymetries of September 2011 and August of 2017, the breakwaters have allowed the displacement of thalweg towards the central area of the river as well as the sedimentation of fine material on the right zone. Consequently, it is evidenced the deepening of the riverbed in the central zone. Finally, according to the above, it is concluded that the breakwaters are fulfilling their main function of mitigating the erosion of the right bank (bordering the interoceanic highway). It is recommended to carry out the same procedure and/or methodology before the realization of a project of riparian defenses, because it is very important not only to quantify or describe flow streams, but also to know the transport of sediments that occurs in the area taking advantage of new technologies in the measurement of rivers.
