The present work addresses the problem of the decolouration of textile effluents from the dyeing process, in particular, with direct dyes, used by small companies in the sector oriented to garment markets dyed with economic prices. Work began with the spectrophotometric study of the most representative direct dyes, which were provided by a textile company in the city of Lima. This allowed to determine the concentration of the dyes in the tests carried out. Then, from the evaluation of commercially available activated carbons, the one with the best performance in adsorption was selected, for its later use in column. For the different dyes, individually, the adsorption isotherms were obtained and the adsorption was tested at different flows and input concentrations using packed columns of three different diameters, two from laboratory scale and one from pilot scale. The rupture curves were studied and modeled mathematically, and a measure of the adsorption efficiency was proposed. The proposed models consider the variability of the composition and the volumes to be treated, which makes it possible to monitor these factors in routine operations. In the pilot scale column, a real effluent provided by the collaborating textile company was treated. Based on the study of the adsorption for individual direct dyes, the need to decrease the concentration of textile effluents prior to the adsorption treatment with activated carbon in the column was determined, which was carried out by means of the coagulation method with sulfate of aluminum. Finally, design criteria are proposed for a fixed bed tower with granular activated carbon for the type of industrial textile effluent studied.
