The present investigation topic was developed with the purpose of determining the influence when dosing ferric chloride in the improvement of the efficiency of the Specific Methanogenic Activity (SMA) of the sludge in a UASB reactor. In addition, evaluate their influence at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) for environmental conditions in Metropolitan Lima in the months of July to November, where conditions are less favorable. The system consisted of two laboratory-scale UASB reactors of the same size, fed by the pre-treatment effluent from the CITRAR-FIA-UNI pilot plant that treats the wastewater from the human settlements, El Milagro and El Angel. The investigation consisted in comparing the two UASB reactors, where one of them was dosed with ferric chloride. In addition, the investigation was divided into three stages. In the first stage the reactors worked with 10 hours of HRT; the second stage with 12 hours of HRT and the third stage with 14 hours of HRT. In each stage, the dosage of ferric chloride was varied, in order to preserve the ferric chloride concentration of 5 mg/l in one of the reactors. In all the stages, the Specific Methanogenic Activity (SMA), the removal of the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and volatile solids (VSS) were evaluated; as well as methane production, conductivity and dilute hydrogen sulfide. Where the height of the mud mantle from 60 to 70 cm (46-54%) was conserved. From the results obtained, in the reactor with ferric chloride, a greater improvement of the Specific Methanogenic Activity was evidenced, and turbidity when the HRT is less than 12 hours. In all stages there is a greater removal of BOD5. As the HRT exceeds 12 hours, the conditions in both son reactors are similar. In all the stages an inhibition of bad odors in the reactor with ferric chloride is evidenced, turning the effluent a blackish color.
