In this work, the study of the nitrification and denitrification processes in a DHS reactor was carried out, making changes in hydraulic retention times, in order to obtain significant removals of total nitrogen. The DHS reactor was fed with the UASB reactor effluent and recirculation. The system was operated under ambient physical conditions and was conducted under hydraulic retention times of 1.5 hours and 3 hours. The experiment was carried out over a period of 411 days. The results showed that the DHS system achieved removal average efficiencies of 88.94% for NH4+-N, 34.79% for total nitrogen (TN), 92.36% for COD, > 98.12% for BOD5, 3.68 log for total coliforms y 3.93 log for fecal coliforms, at average organic loading rate (ORL) of 1.32 Kg COD/m3/d and hydraulic retention time of 1.5 hours. For a hydraulic retention time of 3 hours, the DHS reactor achieved removal average efficiencies of 99.76% for NH4+-N, 41.10% for total nitrogen (TN), 95.51% for COD and > 97.71% for BOD5 at average organic loading rate (ORL) of 0.98 Kg COD/m3/d. The effluent from the treatment system fulfilled in its mature stage with the maximum permissible limits for effluents from wastewater treatment plants in the following parameters: fecal coliform, BOD5, COD, pH and temperature. In addition, it complied with the ECA Agua in Category 1 in its subcategory B2 and in the Category 3 in its subcategory D1 and D2, for the following parameters BOD5, COD, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, fecal coliforms and total coliforms. It was found that the nitrification and denitrification processes were carried out in the DHS reactor. From the results obtained it can be concluded that the hydraulic retention times is 3 hours for the removal of total nitrogen (NT).
