The present investigation shows the results of the use of the natural polymer obtained from the cactus Echinopsis Pachanoi as an assistant of coagulation, the investigation had as objective to check the efficiency in the removal of turbidity in natural water samples. Jar tests were performed to determine the optimum parameters of dosage, flocculation and sedimentation; in a first stage using Aluminum Sulfate only as primary coagulating and then a second stage using Aluminum Sulfate More the Echinopsis Pachanoi as an assistant of coagulation. For the employment and obtaining the natural polymer became the thistles of Echinopsis Pachanoi powder for your heavy and dosage; by cleaning, cutting, drying and crushing of the thistles. The water samples for research were taken from the Chillon River and were classified into three, according to the turbidity: Sample of 303 UNT Type I, Type II sample of 104 UNT and sample of the Type III of 30 NTU. The results obtained show that the use of the natural polymer of Echinopsis Pachanoi as an assistant of coagulation influences the reduction of the optimal dose of aluminum sulfate, between a range of 14% to 23%, showing the greatest reduction in 30 samples of UNT (26 mg/l to 20 mg/l) and the lowest in the sample of 303 NTU (of 42 mg/l to 36 mg/l). The results show an increase in the rates of decanting using the assistant of coagulation Echinopsis Pachanoi compared to the use of Aluminum Sulfate Only: The Sample Type I have an increase of 21% (from 42 to 51 m3/m2/day), the Sample Type II presents 14% increase (from 36 to 41 m3/m2/day) and the Sample Type III a 29% (from 38 to 49 m3/m2/day). There is a reduction in the volume of sludge from a range of 29% to 33% in water samples using the natural polymer, the greatest reduction was presented in the Sample Type III (12.0 ml to 8.0 ml), as well as the sludge obtained is compact and less watery compared to the sludge produced by the Aluminum Sulfate. It was determined that the cost of treatment per cubic meter (m3) using the natural polymer of Echinopsis Pachanoi in conjunction with the Aluminum Sulfate (cost of Sample Type I is S/. 0,253, of the Sample Type II is S/.0,195 and the Sample Type III is S/.0,156) is not profitable versus cost using only the Aluminum Sulfate (cost of Sample Type I is S/. 0,134, of the Sample Type II is S/.0,096 and the Sample Type III is S/.0,083), this is due to the low cost of synthetic coagulant.
