In the Chemistry Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Faculty at the National University of Engineering, Chemicals are used and wastes are produced. Sorne of them are toxic and dangerous substances to which students, professors and employees are exposed. For that reason, an Environment Management System set up is needed for handling and final disposal of those wastes. Furthermore, consciousness on pollution prevention, personal protection and substitution of toxic chemicals must be created on people, because damage repairing is no use when it is done and many times is irreversible. The present work is made of: Diagnosis. - in which, laboratory conditions related to the need of hazardous waste management is shown. To do so, methodological tools have been used, such as polis in order to know people's opinion and knowledge on safety, environment, and chemical waste handling, to measure acceptance in applying these management measures and to get suggestions from subject people, and danger and risk assessment are made to determine environment impacts. Set up.- it comprises steps to assume the proposal of hazardous chemical waste management. In this way, development of sensitiveness campaign is stated through conferences given to aware subject people. Then, chemical waste reclaim system by segregating chemicai wasies from the start is made. Personal safety measurements are taken, and the written proposal of the waste management system is given. Finally, recommendations for final disposal of the obtained chemical wastes are stated. In addition, successful toxic and carcinogenic reactant substitutions were made, such as carbon tetrachloride (CCU) and potassium dichromate ((K2Cr2O7). This work shows that it is possible to avoid the emission of toxic wastes into the environment and also to protect people's health.
