The present thesis “Titanium dioxide thin film production and its evaluation in the photodegradation of organic materials” presents the fabrication of nanostructured thin films of TiO2 by spray pyrolysis technique from peroxo-polytitanic-acid complex solutions obtained mixing Ti powder with H2O2 and NitiOH3. These solutions were deposited on substrates of soda lime glass. Coatings were obtained changing parameters as HCl concentration, from 0.176 to 0.281 M; deposition temperature, at 230, 280, 330, 380 and 430 °C; film thickness, at 50, 190, 220 and 400 nm. The films have been used in the photodegradation of a methylene blue test solution at 20 ppm by means of UV radiation using a homemade photoreactor designed and built for these tests. The samples which showed better photocatalytic behavior were those prepared with [HCI] = 0.214 M, Ts = 280 °C and thickness of 400 nm. Photoreaction tests were also evaluated for films annealed at thermal treatment in air atmosphere at 500 °C for 3 hours. The chemical-physics characterization of the films was made by profilometry, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible Spectroscopy, IR Spectroscopy by Fourier Transforms (FTIR) and Characteristics X-Ray Spectroscopy (ChXR). Films with promising performance for methylene blue photodegradation have sho^ to have a nanometric structure of the TiO2 whit an average grain size of 10 nm. The structure shows an abundance of an amorphous phase and slightly crystalline brokite phase. The photoreactive performance of the TiO2 films was evaluated by measuring the kinetic constants k and ks; they have sho a rather good behavior In this work is reported the TiO2 with low crystallynity in its photocatalytic efficiency. Results suggest the preparation of these films at low temperatures on substrates such as polymers giving the possibility to generate technologies for waste water photodegradation that can be used with solar radiation to photodegradate organic pollutants.
