In a single-phase reclosing extra high voltage lines, the faulted phase is isolated by opening the switches at both ends of the line, the faulted phase conductor is still energized because electromagnetic and electrostatic coupling to the phases energized in parallel. This means that a persistent voltage at the point of failure that can keep the fault current to a lesser current level. This is know as secondary arc current is a current that usually follows the path of the arc energy after disconnecting the faulted phase. One of the problems that must be solved in this thesis is to choose the mathematical model for calculating secondary arc current and recovery voltage in extra high voltage lines, in order that when the single-phase reclosing is performed, current secondary arc is extinguished at a time and it can lead to a successful reclosing. This thesis analyzes the transient interaction of the secondary arc current to the system of extra high voltage by simulation, for which, algebraic, differential equations and matrices, which arise from the formulation and development of a mathematical model are solved. To this end, an appropriate mathematical model of the electric arc defined in the extra high voltage lines as one of the most outstanding contributions. Additionally, the needs and characteristics required protective equipment to perform single-phase reclosers and evaluate the effects that cause secondary arc current is defined. Simulation module was implemented to analyze the behavior of the secondary arc current and recovery voltage in extra high voltage lines with the ATP-EMTP electromagnetic transients program.
