This paper’s main objective was to implement a kind of alternative or complementary process of alkaline chlorination process in order to reduce the presence of cyanogen chloride and chloramines from water treated by EMS’s plant, while maintaining efficiency in the degradation of cyanide. In laboratory was studied the application of H2O2, NaClO and H2O2-NaClO to oxidize the cyanide solution. The combination of hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite form the singlet oxygen, which has been able to oxidize the cyanide , having a 94 % removal of cyanide at 10 minutes into the degradation tests . In contrast Singlet oxygen and sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide present slow oxidation kinetics both pH 9 and pH 11. In industrial plant tests were performed combining H2O2 – Cl2 , varying the ratio between the two reactants ( [ NaClO + H2O2 ] [CN - ] = 1.2:1) , resulting in lower consumption of chlorine , generating a minimum of chloramines chloride cyanogen turn maintaining effective oxidation of cyanide .
