The present research project took place in the Administrative Economic Unit Orcopampa - Chipmo Mine which is located in the district of Orcopampa, province of Castilla, department of Arequipa. Currently, the mine has a daily production of 1500 MT of ore with an average grade of 12g Au/t, with its main extraction work being the levels 3540, 3340, 3230, 3110 and 3050. One of the main problems in the mine and that directly influences the subsequent processes are the unit drilling and rock blasting operations which show many deficiencies in relation to not following the correct work practices resulting in an inadequate fragmentation and excessive overshooting both on gutters and on the crown of the excavation. All these bad results lead to increase our operating costs (drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, holding, crushing and grinding) which in the current situation is a harmful issue both for the mine and for all its collaborators. The overall objective of the project is to reduce damage to the rocky massif by applying controlled blasting on the forward fronts using good drilling and rock blasting practices. In the long term, the improvement will not only be reflected in the savings achieved; But also, in terms of safety, our accident rates due to rock fall will be reduced due to the more stable and safe terrain. For the development of the work, a baseline study was started which details the initial situation that the work presents before any implementation, here it highlights the good and bad practices executed in the operation; As well as measurements of overtraffic, efficiencies and blasting factors. After that, it was decided to design a mesh of drilling which is adjusted to the quality of rock, operational parameters and dimension of the section with the purpose of to distribute of better way the drills of production in the front of work so that finally, It is tested and adjusted according to the results obtained in the field. After the implementation of the project and its adjustments, on average, a reduction of the over break was achieved in 65%, the blasting efficiency increased by 2,5%, the load factor was reduced by 20% and total compliance was achieved of the standards during the executed shots. The long-term purpose of this project is for workers not to rely on supervision to obtain excellence in their operation, which will be achieved through first-time follow-up and training of staff in their work.
