Chemical modification of alginate with thiosemicarbazide was achieved by an oxidative reaction between alginate and sodium peryodate in aqueous medium at room temperature in complete darkness. The obtained product is a partially oxidized alginate which reacts with thiosemicarbazide (TSC) in aqueous medium at around 40 – 45 °C giving a new modified structure of alginate (Alg-TSC). Thiosemicarbazide has a thione (C=S) and an amino free group (-NH2) in its structure which allows the molecule to behave as a chelate agent, whose main function is to coordinate heavy metal ions such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) combined with the carboxylate group (COO-) of the alginate. ATR-IR spectra were obtained from the alginate and its derivatives including the spectra of modified alginate after the adsorption with lead (Alg-TSC-Pb). Besides this, 13C CP-MAS NMR spectra were obtained of all alginate derivatives even the complex Alg-TSC-Pb. Its characteristic peaks were analyzed and its possible signals were assigned. As well as that, TG and DSC curves of these polymeric structures give very important information about the behavior of alginate during chemical modification and when it is surrounded by heavy metal ion. Finally, the adsorption capacity of the modified polymer was estimated with only Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions in the aqueous medium reporting a maximum value of qmáx = 680 mg.g-1 and qmáx = 550 mg.g-1 respectively. Moreover, optimal conditions of pH were determined in order to enhance the adsorption process.
