Water is an increasingly scarce resource, so it is necessary to use it rationally, which implies sustainable water management. The latex paint industry in Peru generates significant discharges of industrial aqueous effluents, which is estimated at approximately 100 m3/day per production plant. This is why the main objective of this thesis is to verify the feasibility of reusing water by means of a treatment of said effluents. The effluents coming from the latex paint industry are generated during the washing operations of the production equipment and are typically characterized by coloring, the concentration of suspended solids and the concentration of organic matter above the maximum allowable values. Likewise, the bacterial concentration is high, because the bacteria take as nutrients some organic components of the formulation of latex paints. These characteristics determine that they are not suitable for direct use in the production of latex paints. This is why a treatment of the effluent is carried out in which the water with the desired characteristics is recovered. The treatment of these effluents consisted in a first stage of physicochemical treatment, which consists in the sedimentation of the solids, which is achieved with the addition of coagulant and flocculant. Then the disinfection stage of the effluent is given, in order to reduce the concentration of bacteria. In the experimental part of the present thesis was used for the physicochemical treatment, aluminum polychloride as coagulant and anionic polyacrylamide as flocculant. It was determined by tests that the coagulant dose is 1200 ppm and the flocculant dosage is 2 ppm. For the disinfection stage, sodium hypochlorite was used, a dose of 10 ppm and a contact time of one hour being calculated. Finally, after the disinfection process, recovered water was obtained with the following parameters: concentration of suspended solids equal to 12 mg/L, pH of 7.3, concentration of residual chlorine equal to 0.6 ppm and concentration of bacteria less than 103 colony forming units/mL. In the experimental part of the present thesis 3 types of latex paints were made with the recovered water: a base of acrylic resin, styrene acrylic and acrylic vinyl. The properties of these test paints met the quality parameters: pH, density and viscosity of each type of paint within the permitted ranges. In addition, the stability of the test paints has been evaluated in comparison with standard paints. As a result of this thesis, it has been proven that it is possible to reuse recovered water in the production of paints from the point of view of quality and quantity. In quality it complies with the production of latex paints within the parameters of quality and in the quantity obtained considerable volumes of water, being equal to 56% of the volume of the effluent.
