This thesis presents the design and implementation of a Vibrating Sample Mag-netometer with a sensitivity on the order of 10−4 emu, capable of measuring magnetic moments on the order of 101 emu under the influence of a maximum applied magnetic field magnitude of 2300 Oe. The VSM detects the magnetization of magnetic materials by the electromagnetic induction of an e.m.f. on detection coils. This document details the process of implementing a VSM, its components and the measurement automation. Control of the instruments was accomplished using the Python programming language. Calibration was performed using a square piece of nickel strip (Ni, 99.9 % pure) and the characterization of various planar magnetic samples such as magnetic recording media and magnetic material deposited by sputtering was carried out in order to test the VSM’s functionalities.
