The main objective of this thesis is to study the behavior of open pit slopes of a mining project located in southwestern Peru, in terms of displacements and safety factors against shear failure. The future excavations can reach depths exceeding 900 m to reach the ore body and there are geological faults that may increase the potential risk of collapse of the slopes. The stress-strain analysis were carried out by the finite element method in a 20 model, considering the existence and absence of fault system, to better estímate and understand the influence of these on the displacements in the face of slopes as excavation progresses. This study also investigated the differences in the results obtained with two commercial finite element programs for solution of geotechnical problems (Phase2 and Plaxis 20) considering the different methodologies used by these software in the simulation of fractures in continuous media. Safety factors determined by the finite element method were also compared with those calculated by the limit equilibrium method (method of slices). In general, it could be observed that the effects of discontinuities are greater in the fields of horizontal displacements and they also tend to decrease the values of safety factors, even below the mínimum limits recommended by international standards.
