The San Juan prospect is located in the community of 14 Incas, San Juan district, Ancash region. From a metallogenic standpoint, it is located in the Miocene belt (Noble & Mckee, 1999), which also hosts important porphyry Cu-Mo deposits of importance as Mamaniña, El Águila and Magistral. The sedimentary rock abounding in the area of study corresponds to the Chicama Formation of clayey lithology, Chimú Formation mainly quartz, Santa Formation predominantly calcareous, and the Carhuaz Formation with a predominantly clayey composition. The lithology described is folded and faulted as a result of compressional deformation (Andean System). As for the magmatism, a first event, possibly tonalitic in composition, was recognized, having spread in the form of a sill and produced contact with the rocks of the Santa Formation to form irregular replacement bodies. A second event, granodioritie in composition is located in the north-western part of the prospect. The presence of intrusive tonalite would be associated with an extensional regime with possible dextral lateral, displacement resulting from the Andean compressional regime that the zone has been subject to in the past (Andean System), and is situated on the flank of a local syncline with axis N40° - 50°O. According to preliminary interpretation made during the mapping, in the prospect five fault systems have been identified; they are listed in chronological order, from the oldest to the most recent, as follows: 1.- N50°-60°O/75°-80°SO; 2.- N40°-50°E/65°-75°SE; 3.- N30°-40°E/60°-75°NO (structural vein control); 4.- N40°-45°O/45°-50°NE and 5.- N60°- 70°O/80°-85°NE. The mainly Cu mineralization occurs as dissemination, located as disseminations, stockwork veinlets and veins. The mineralized intrusive rocks are of the tonalitic porphyry type, mainly with phyllic alteration and sporadic occurrence of chlorites in hornblende, scattered mineralization and veinlets with pyrrhotite 1-1.5%, 1% pyrite and traces of chalcopyrite and iron oxides (goethite) in fractures-matrix; the stockwork is irregular. There is also a granodiorite porphyry with chlorite and calcite alteration in scattered patches, with an incipient appearance of scattered pyrite mineralization. Stockwork zones are determined by the pattern of the cuartz-sulphide-iron oxide and sulphide veins, generally leached, with a leaching potential ranging from 0.2cm to < 1cm. The replacement bodies have formed within the metamorphic aureole of the tonalitic porphyry, with calcareous horizons of the Santa Formation, and development of gray hornfels with scattered sulphides in more lutaceous forms. The veins present cut through the mineralized tonalitic porphyry system, whose strike and dip values are N33°-40°E and 65°-75°NO with a potential of 2 - 25cm. Using a surface sampling program and trenching, 225 samples were collected using the systematic method of chips sampling; the objective of this work is to confirm mineralization abnormalities identified macroscopically in the field. Since more than one hydrothermal alteration event has occurred and shows characteristics related to a porphyry system with anomalous values of economic interest with regards to the San Juan prospect, it is proposed to complete the geochemical screening and conduct a semi-detailed geophysical program aimed at proposing and implementing a reconnaissance diamond drilling program in order to determine in depth the exploratory and geo-economic potential of the deposit.
