The span loss variable is very important to know if an optical fiber cable segment is truly attenuated. Operators of the SAM-1 submarine cable network rely on reading this variable to detect an outage or degradation in a segment of the extensive optical cable network or control the attenuation levels of the optical fiber laying. However, currently measuring this variable is not obtained in real time on Technology Ciena Management system for this project. This thesis is focused on developing a methodology by software that allows automate the measurement of the span loss variable and to provide a complementary tool to the Management and Monitoring Platform Ciena. To carry out this work, we will use the object-oriented programming Language named Python, The TL1 management protocol and SQLite database engine. The development of this work leads to explore and understand the whole system of data acquisition of Ciena network.
