In industrial and mining enterprises (sector) is usual to use high power engines powered by variable speed Drives, that have been used in order to make processes more efficient, nevertheless, due id construction aspects and network effects, failures can appear in these equipments, interrupting the production process and causing important economics losses. The most common failures occur in the inverter stage of the driver that is composed by multilevel inverters. This document presents the modeling, study and simulation of a control system that allows multilevel inverters to tolerate failures produced in the switching devices, through reconfiguration of trigger signals modulation, without affecting the engine performance and ensuring the service continuity. There will be the description of neutral point clamped multilevel inverter (NPC) three levels and the cascade multilevel inverter seven levels, in which will be applied the proposed strategy. A real mining electrical system, that existing, is modeled, in 4.16kV - 1,360MVA (composed by transformer-drive-motor) where the inverter configuration is a three levels NPC and present a failure in the inverter stage, in this system was tested the strategy proposed. It is proposed to use a cascaded multilevel inverter seven levels, due to flexibility to tolerate failure, analyzing multiple cases because of the greater quantity of switching devices that it has. For modeling of these systems is been used the PSCAD/EMTDC software. At the end of this thesis are given guidelines for future works.
