Commonly, the evaluation of the slope stability in rock masses with blocky structure is realized by empirical techniques and less frequently by numerical methods, for design stages and site verification. An alternative method of analysis, such as the numerical simulation, is shown as a tool for achieving this objective. This thesis shows that the application of the Finite Element Method with explicit representation of discontinuities (called J-MEF) is an alternative to the use of the Discrete Element Method for the analysis of failure mechanism in rock masses with a blocky structure. The use of constitutive models, as perfectly elastic plastic model, to evaluate the rupture of rock slopes considering the scale factor, and calculate the safety factor was verified. The thesis also compares the safety factor obtained by conventional Limit Equilibrium method and the Finite Element Method, and the comparison of results obtained applying the method J-MEF and the Discrete Element Method. Finally, using the stereographic projection methodology, an open pit slopes were designed, and the influence of the scale effect considering several phases of excavation was numerically analized.
