The mam objective of the present Thesis is studying the factors that have an important role m the effectiveness of bracing m an arch bridge, taking as a basic structure the project of the new Bolognesi Bndge. built m 2000 in Piura. Northern Peru: m this project, a bracing system with transversal beams were used. In order to get this objective, a review of the allowable literature about stability analysis of arches was done. A summary of theories about analysis of m plane buckling and lateral buckling of arches is presented, as well as the basis of matrix formulation of the problem of stability m structures, because of the models developed m computer analysis programs are solved by matrix techniques. The structural analysis developed in this study consisted of. firstly, studying the levels of internal stresses m both the prototype and the reduced-scale model, m order to define the loads to be applied during the test. Secondly, a systematic analysis of the arch bridge were done, from the free arch, the arch with tie-beam, the bndge without braces and the complete bndge: a comparison between the analyzed systems are presented. In the complete bndge. the way of failure of the system consists of yielding of tie-beam. In addition to. a post-buckling analysis of the complete bndge was done by large- displacement analysis: the mam results were getting a stable post-buckling behavior of the bridge (assuming that the other elements do not fail before) and observing the important influence of the ties during the post-buckling stage, m which they can have stresses greater than those of vertical loads, even reaching failure. A parametnc analysis of the arch bndge buckling was also done, m order to study the influence of several variables m the cntical load of the bridge and. setting these influences, to propose an expression to consider the most important variables and to get a modified slenderness regarding the charactenstics of the bracing system. The scale-model test was made taking into account the results of previous structural analysis. The results of the test showed that the model could stand the ultimate design loads safely and that could continue stable even with lateral displacements larger than those of a design earthquake. The condition of critical load was reached with a vertical load equivalent to 2.34 tunes the permanent load: consequently, the model could stand 2.56 tunes the live load (additional to maxun permanent load), which is a value larger than the load factors of the current codes. The extrapolation of the values obtained m the test to the prototype would lead to conservative loads for the load capacity of the structure. However, the failure condition m the test was the rupture of ties m one of the arches, which involved a nonlinear behavior of the structure, mainly showed m the remaining lateral displacement after the collapse of the model. From the failure forms observed, analytically and experimentally, it is concluded that the yielding failure of the tie-beam should control the design of the entire system, as a “desuable“ failure within a capacity design strategy, m comparison of the buckling failure of the arch and the fragile failure of the ties connectors.
