The foundation of the national economy is supported by the exploitation of natural resources, for instance mining, With the new laws about conservation of the environment mining activities have to rigorously observe all operations at each of the different levels to avoid or minimize damage to the ecosystem. Because of the tectonic, climatic, volcanic, geological and geophysical condition in our country we are exposed to natural phenomena, especially of the seismic kind but also floods, landslides and volcanic eruptions, By looking back into Peru's history, it can be seen that Perú and above all the south of Perú is susceptible to these violent events. The Geophysics Institute of the San Agustin University has over approximately four decades, been concerned with geophysical phenomena and geodynamics problems. This study aims to use all available information in order to determine the risk and vulnerability of the main mining towns. in addition, objective evaluations have been carried out to check on proceedings and the state of the mining production centres environment. It has been possible to determine that the zones vulnerable to seismic events are the mining tows located mainly in coastal areas. Together with this, there is the problem of the poor technical and physical conditions of the mining industry. As far as volcanic processes we concerned, the danger areas are to be found in the vicinities of the Misti, Ubinas and Sabancaya volcanoes. In contrast landslides and floods especially effect the higher areas of Arequipa because of the geological conditions and the heavy rainfall. In the south of Perú we have recently experienced problems in the mining industry because of the natural phenomena. Examples of this include the collapse of tailings deposits due to seismic instability in both Acari and Chala caused by the earthquake in November 1996 and floods and avalanches this year in the Madrigal Mines.
