During the last few years, significant advances have been made in relation to the analysis of translating humor within the field of audiovisual translation; however, there are still certain aspects that can be investigated in more depth, especially in relation to subtitling. Therefore, the present research aims to analyze the process of transferring verbal humor in the subtitling from American English to neutral Spanish of the sitcom Brooklyn 99 (2013-2021). It is assumed that translation techniques aligned to the interpretive-communicative method have been used in order to maintain the humorous element in the subtitles. These allow translators to approach the content in a freer and more creative way. In addition, the pragmatic dimension will also be considered for the analysis, given that in many situations the humorous load depends on non-linguistic elements, such as the context of the situation or the speaker's intention. In this sense, as in a sitcom it is important that the translation of the humor causes a similar reaction in the target audience, the translator has the role of assessing and compensating for any loss of humor. Consequently, it is possible to infer that the way the humor has been conveyed differs from the way it is presented in the original product. Thus, the linguistic elements of verbal humor have probably been modified or even eliminated in order to preserve the humorous function of the sitcom.
