The study was oriented to know the socioeconomic vulnerability and the response capacity of quinoa producers in the face of climatic events in the Peruvian Altiplano, where climate variability and change have been affecting family farming, generating economic losses, conditions of poverty and food insecurity, mainly among low-income producers. Considering that 65.6 % of producers are subsistence, more than a fifth is in a situation of extreme poverty, the high dependence on rain (only 2.2% has irrigation) and on the products and income of the agricultural activity, the impacts are significant and the vulnerability of families becomes evident. The most recurring and severe dangers are droughts and frosts, for which the response capacity is limited and is subject to the producers' own resources, since very few have access to social services. Producers with greater resources have better possibilities to implement adaptation and coping measures, while those with fewer resources are mostly oriented towards remediation of damages, forced to reduce their diet or change their consumption patterns. This aggravates their vulnerability and traps them in the poverty trap. In this context, risk management is key for Puno families, the revaluation of ancestral knowledge and practices (such as planting and harvesting water) could be effective for this purpose. Climate services that respond to the needs of the population are useful for decision-making, as has been demonstrated, and contribute to resilience in the face of climate change, whenever barriers to their effective use are overcome, and for that purpose its incorporation into public policies is essential.
