This project was developed with the aim of proposing an alternative craft masonry unit, with the use of steel shavings as a component within its traditional manufacture in the city of Chiclayo. Initially, raw materials such as clay earth, fine sand and shavings were obtained, which are residues of lathes and workshops, in order to determine their physicochemical properties. Subsequently, a blend design was developed for traditional units and units added with 8%, 10% and 12% steel chip, which allows us to produce masonry units added with steel chip. Tests were then carried out on the masonry units, batteries and bricks. The tests were carried out according to the Masonry Standard E0. 70 and by means of the NTP 399. 613 it was demonstrated that the properties of absorption, dimensional variation, bending, weight per unit area and efflorescence are acceptable in masonry units added with 10% steel chip, as well as their compressive strength was superior to the sample. with a value of 127. 12kg/cm2, therefore this unit would be classified as a Type IV brick according to the RNE. In tests carried out on prisms and bricks following the recommendations of NTP 399. 605 and NTP 399. 621, they exceeded the minimum strength for load-bearing walls. In conclusion, the masonry unit with the addition of 10% of steel chip would be an economical solution and with acceptable strengths according to the Peruvian Standard E0. 70.
