Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is an endocrine disorder that can alter the course and severity of periodontal disease (PD) and it can also influence the metabolic control of diabetes. The behavior of both diseases has demanded various efforts in the search for alternatives to improve the effect of periodontal mechanical therapy in these patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between diabetes mellitus and the degree of periodontal disease in patients of the Preventive Unit adult and elderly Hospital II - EsSalud, Moquegua, 2015. Transversal, prospective, observational study. The sample consisted of 69 elderly patients, 35 PD patients (cases) and 34 patients without PE (control), in which exposure is sought with and without diabetes mellitus. To identify the degree of periodontal disease the Russell Periodontal Index was used. The type and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was obtained by glucose levels performed by a glucometer and review of the clinical history of each patient. It was determined that the frequency of PD is the 50.72% and prevails moderate and severe periodontitis. The distribution of diabetes in the study population prevails in females where seven out of ten women suffer; regarding periodontal disease accounts for 55.56% for females, reaching higher proportion of patients without periodontal disease (healthy) in males (54.55%). In diabetic patients, moderate and severe periodontitis do a whole 43.48%. And the most common type of diabetes is type 2 diabetes mellitus in both clinical stages of periodontitis reaches 17.39%. It was concluded that there is high dependence of periodontal disease and the presence of diabetes in our study population (p = 0.000), reached diabetics risk of presenting periodontal disease 131.43 times more than people who did not have diabetes, with 95% CI = Inf: 15,195 Area: 1131,873.
