The present investigation “Cost management in underground mining. Case study: El Porvenir mining unit”; its general objective is to analyze the methods of underground exploitation from a technical and economic perspective. This topic has been chosen due to its importance in the mining sector, since today organizations in this area face complex and uncertain economic situations, due to competition, oscillation of inputs, market uncertainty and external factors such as the price of commodities (metals). This implies that companies must react immediately to these complex problems. For its part, the hypothesis proposes the reevaluation of the operating models to guarantee cost management. This research is of a quantitative nature because were analyzed the indicators of NPV, IRR, and IRP for the mineralized polymetallic body V. Éxito, which is adjusted to the technical conditions of the method of mining Sublevel Stoping. In this way, in 2018 the mining unit El Porvenir, where the extraction of minerals was executed by the method of exploitation Cut and Fill, registered the problem of high operating costs, mainly due to the mine area with a deviation of 24.82% over the budget, since the Cash Cost ROM mine registered 38.4 US$ / ton. Likewise, Darling establishes the relation of costs, of the methods of underground exploitation of Sublevel Stoping, regarding the Cut and Fill is 0.66, while the relation of productivity is moderate and low respectively. Within the Nexa group, the Cerro Lindo mining unit presents the Sublevel Stoping exploitation method, for which comparisons were made with respect to the El Porvenir mining unit, confirming the relationships established. As a result, it is possible to reduce operating costs in underground mining, mainly in the mine area, by managing the change of mining method in a part of the operating process. In the case of the El Porvenir mining unit, the implementation of the Sublevel Stoping exploitation method was simulated for approximately 40% of total production, obtaining Cash Cost ROM mine of 27.01 US$ / ton, according to calculations.
