The aim of the current study is to identify and describe the relational configuration of first-time fathers of low socioeconomic level in Lima with their preschool children. For this, a qualitive investigation was carried out with a phenomenological-interpretative design in three fathers using a semi-structured interview and an interview based on the RAP [Relationship Anecdotes Paradigm] (Luborsky, 1998). The material was analyzed based on the thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2012), taking as reference the components of the CCRT method proposed by Luborsky and Cristoph (19998 in Villarán, 2017). The results show that the paternal absence, both real and affective, is an aspect that characterizes the relational dynamics of fathers with their children. The requirement to accomplish an ideal paternity and the way in which they have been socialized set the stage for absence. Also, it was found that the way they relate to their children is mediated by the presence of the mother with whom they compare and seek to differentiate themselves. In that sense, the relationship with the mother influence the co-parenting and the paternalfilial bond. Finally, fathers share the desire not to be harsh and authoritarian ones, so the aggression appears as a fantasy that they do not wish to fulfill. Thus, the fathers are in the transition towards a close, affective and present paternity.
