Based on Self-determination Theory (SDT), the aim of this study was to analyze the relationship among the motivational teaching style perceived by the student (autonomy support versus psychological control), basic psychological needs (satisfaction versus frustration), types of motivation (autonomous versus controlled), and engagement and disengagement in a sample of 306 students of Literature courses of a private university in Lima. This study also examined the psychometric properties of the instruments (evidences of validity and reliability). Descriptive and correlational analysis were made. The hypothetical model was studied through path analysis. The final model showed good fit indices: el X2(10) = 28.19 (p<.01), el RMSEA=.078, el SRMR=.056, el CFI=.99 y el AIC= 164.19. The results of the path analysis showed positive relationships between the perceived autonomy-supportive teaching, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, autonomous motivation and engagement. The results were consistent with the Bright side pattern of the SDT. On the other hand, consistent with the Dark side pattern, the perceived psychological control teaching had significant relationships with the frustration of basic psychological needs, the controlled motivation and the disengagement.
