Play allows children to develop capacities and abilities such as the possibility of imagining and changing reality; the capacity to share and to take part; the organization and mutual help; as well as the sense of community. In this way, play could make children acquire outstanding qualities for the community development processes. Having this as starting point, the present study describes the social representations of a group mothers and fathers of a small village in the coast of Peru as far as childhood play is concerned, and shows how these representations are linked to the community development processes. The research was carried out in a group of 12 adults, 8 women and 4 men, aged between 20 and 48 (M=37; SD=8,6). They have lived in the village “La Garita” for between 15 and 48 years (M=32; SD=11). Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were implemented with a thematic guide and participatory interviews. Results showed that there is an ambivalent representation regarding children play. On the one hand, parents express their fears in relation with the play and the conditions it requires; on the other hand, they also acknowledge positively its value and importance, since it allows the children to get closer to the public space, to assimilate social norms and to develop new values and abilities. Furthermore, gender was found to be a transverse variable for the whole of the study.
