The research focuses on the photographic series “Vírgenes de la Puerta“ (2015) by Juan José Barboza-Gubo and Andrew Mroczek, which explores the iconographic appropriation of the Catholic religion in contemporary photography. This aesthetic approach aims to highlight social issues, specifically those faced by transgender women, within a marginalized context. It examines how this technique is used to address and promote social work dynamics through photography, appropriationism, and staging. The research also analyzes the impact of Catholic iconography and its adaptations in this series, as well as the challenging situation of trans women in the Peruvian context. The photographic series thus becomes a means to visualize and confront the realities of these women, using powerful symbolic elements of Catholic iconography to raise awareness and reflection on their situation. Ultimately, this study highlights the potential of photography as a tool for social change and the representation of marginalized communities, while questioning established aesthetic and cultural conventions.
