Urban transportation allows economic and social development in cities; however, the current model causes negative externalities such as traffic accidents (human and material damage), vehicular congestion (reduced traffic speed), and environmental damage (increased local and global emissions). The effects associated with emissions of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and air pollutants (AP) have generated concern and demand that the international community fight against climate change and air pollution. For this reason, Peru has ratified the Paris Agreement and has committed to achieving the goals set out in the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as establishing national efforts in the National Urban Transportation Policy and National Environmental Policy. Therefore, the objective of this research is to analyze the environmental benefits due to the reduction of GHG emissions, in terms of their contribution of CO2, and AP, in PM2.5, NOx, and SO2, due to the operation of Line 1 of the Lima Metro. Likewise, this case study is presented as an input that serves as a reference for decision-makers to learn about the benefits of reducing emissions from a sustainable urban transportation system and its promotion for other cities in the country. The methodology applied in the research involves the estimation of the baseline (without operation of Line 1), estimation of emissions resulting from the operation of Line 1 (direct and indirect), estimation of the reduction of emissions (variation of both scenarios). Likewise, a description of the air quality of the city is included and, finally, an evaluation of the social cost avoided by the reduction of emissions of Linea 1. The results obtained show that the emissions reduced by the operation of Line 1, in the accumulated evaluation period from 2015 to 2030, are 576,088 tCO2; 316.15 tPM2,5; 13,414.80 tNOx, and 54.89 tSO2. Similarly, is estimated the accumulated avoided social cost, in the same period, is S/.15,432,425 per CO2; S/. 76,185,860 per PM2,5; S/. 24,959,716 for NOx and S/. 499,356 per SO2, making a total of S/. 117,077,358. Finally, this research explains the importance and difficulties in estimating emissions of an urban transportation system, as well as the importance of the operation of Line 1 as a sustainable urban transportation system, a pioneer in the country, that should be promoted in Lima and other important cities at the national level.
