The main objective of this research was to know the relationship between coping styles and strategies, and the psychological well-being of a patient in a sample of 46 patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The time of diagnosis was not less than six months, with a clinical stage of I to III and treatment received in a private cancer clinic in the city of Lima. To achieve this, the COPE Inventory (Carver, Scheier y Weintraub, 1989) and the Riff Scales of Psychological Well-Being, Carol Ryff (1989), were used. Among the most important results, significant and inverse relationships between overall psychological well-being and avoidance style (r=-.34, p<.05) were found; the same significant and inverse relationship was found between the releasing emotions strategy and the dimensions of psychological well-being: autonomy (r =-.44, p<.01), control of the environment (r =-.46, p<.01) and self-acceptance (r=-.30, p<.01). Study results account for a significant relationship between the concepts investigated, which contributes to an understanding of the psychological well-being of breast cancer patients and could lead to a psychological intervention to promote most favourable coping strategies.
