This thesis describes and analyzes the interaction in three WhatsApp groups in the context of the 2021 general elections, in a context marked by a high level of political polarization. The research is based on a digital ethnography with an exploratory character, in that the author was part of the three groups and participated in the conversations. The data were collected, contextualized and categorized to identify usage patterns and recurring themes on WhatsApp. The results show that political conversations increased on election day, occupying spaces that were previously used for other purposes; however, in the period analyzed they were not forums for polarization or dissemination of false information, rather they served to contrast the data circulating. It should be noted that humor plays a significant role in communication among participants. Furthermore, despite the wide range of multimedia resources available, text was the most widely used expressive resource. The study highlights academic research linked to the use of WhatsApp in Latin America; also the uncertainty and challenges of the pandemic context during these elections. The research connects personal experiences with cultural practices and also describes a particular space of social interaction without attempting to generalize it to society.
