This tesis analyze the political discourses of Fidelity produced by members of the court of Lima in the Viceroyalty of Peru during the War of Spanish Succession (1700-1714). In the context of the dynastic conflict, since fidelity was the central concept that articulated and sustained the monarchy’s political ties, this concept was disputed by austracistas and felipistas in order to obtain the support of the monarchy’s vassals. Understanding that concepts are polysemic and that their use is mediated by its context of enunciation, through the análisis of different textual corpus produced by members of the court of Lima, we will demonstrate that, in this particular context, the concept of Fidelity does not refer only to a single person, but rather multiple ones (monarch, dynasty and monarchy) can exist and coexist in the articulation of the political discoursed produced by the declarants. The “political moment” opened by the War of Spanish Succession will demonstrate how this concept was used in specific situations by different members of the court of Lima in order to achieve specific goals, trying to presentate themselves as faithful vassals. From this, we propose the existence of a political language of Fidelity, which allowed this concept to be subject of public debate and be articulated in multiple ways based on specific problems.
