Repsol S.A. is a global energy company, its goal is zero net emissions by 2050 and all their strategies are aligned to this transformation. It currently operates in more than thirty countries with Spain as its headquarters. In Peru, its activities include exploration, oil refining, transportation of hydrocarbon products such as fuel, natural gas, and LPG, through its different business units. This consultancy focuses on the area of Tanks and Terminals of the La Pampilla Refinery, and its main objective is to reduce operational errors in the transfer of products in the area, thus having positive impacts on the profitability, image of the company, and social responsibility. During the consultancy, an analysis of the area was conducted through SWOT, revision of its procedure’s manuals, and interviews with the team. The main problems were then identified: transfer of products between unscheduled tanks, transfer of incorrect volumes, and transfer of incompatible products. According to figures provided by the programming and control area, in 2020 the economic losses related to avoidable operational errors were of US $ 182,210 and US 168,000 for quality gifts and product reprocesses. Based on the problems, their root causes were sought through the Ishikawa tool and the Deming cycle method to later propose eight solution alternatives, thus prioritizing, and choosing which alternatives to implement. The strategic decision matrix was used in its adapted version considering the factors of innovation, cost, impact, and time, each with a score and percentage, together with management it was decided to implement the following alternatives: make the diagrams of the main systems of tanks and terminals, identification and labeling of the piping and valve systems, updating of the control room schematics and communication and action procedure. The implementation of this proposal manages to reduce operating errors by 80% with a benefit of $ 280,000 per year, likewise, it also helps to reduce environmental impact and provides greater efficiency and increase of safety to the operational procedure.
