The main aim of this research is to analyze — from the science teachers and thirdyear secondary school students’ perceptions — which the strengths and challenges of applying Project-based learning (PBL) for the development of scientific inquiry in a private school in Lima are. At the same time, the specific objectives: i) to describe strengths and challenges of PBL application for inquiry situations problematization, ii) to describe strengths and challenges of PBL application for inquiry planning, iii) to describe strengths and challenges of PBL application for information analysis and generation and, finally, iv) to describe strengths and challenges of PBL application to assess and share the results of a scientific inquiry. The focus of this research is qualitative and the case study method was used because the context in which the PBL approach was applied corresponds to the implementation of a new curriculum design in the private school, mentioned above, where the science area is included in this approach. Further, this is one of the few schools which gathers curriculum areas for PBL application at secondary school. The information collection method was the semi-structured interview and the tool, the interview guideline. The open coding method was used to analyze information. In terms of results, the main strengths found are that in the phases of PBL results processing and generation, and problematization, activities allowing development of skills such as elaboration of hypothesis, results analysis, conclusions drawing, among others are stated, which are related to scientific inquiry. Additionally, the core challenges, which teachers face when applying the approach, take place in the inquiry planning, the results sharing and assessing as well as in the selection of problems for some projects.
