The series about Los principales Misterios de la vida y muerte de Cristo nuestro Salvador y de la Virgen Santísima, su madre (The main Mysteries of the life and death of Christ our Savior and of the Most Holy Virgin, his mother), painted by the Jesuit painter Bernardo Bitti S.J. (Camerino, 1548, Lima, 1610) for the church of Colegio de la Transfiguración (School of Transfiguration) in Cuzco, in the late sixteenth-century, recently discovered in the church of Santo Tomás de Aquino, in the district of Rondocan, province of Acomayo in Cuzco, corresponds to one of the most important findings in Peruvian Art History, given that it is the only series -known so far painted by the Jesuit brother, which in addition has been conserved in its entirety. This thesis starts by establishing a historical framework, from the arrival of the Jesuits to the city of Cuzco in 1571, to the year 1598, year in which the series of eight canvases about Los principales Misterios de la vida y muerte de Cristo nuestro Salvador y de la Virgen Santísima, su madre was displayed on the walls of the main chapel of the church of Colegio de la Transfiguración. Subsequently, an artistic revision is made about brother Bernardo’s sojourn in the city of Cuzco, with the purpose of highlighting his entire known and existing artistic production which the aforementioned city hosts, as well as highlighting the prevalence of its theme. Thereafter, through archive documents, in particular the unpublished file about the clearance sale of the canvases of the once Jesuit school’s ante sacristy in the sixteenth-century, it is followed the series’ journey, from the church of Colegio de la Transfiguración in Cuzco, to its current location in the church of Santo Tomás de Aquino in Rondocan. Lastly, an iconographic and iconological study is made of the series with diverse visual Italian, Flemish and Central European references. Additionally, it is proposed an updated dialog of his existing and missing artistic production, which offers bibliographic references that have allowed the attribution of his works.
