Women’s participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers, is still limited despite the fact that women composed more than 50 percent of the student body in higher education in Peru. One out of four students pursuing STEM careers is a woman (Biennial of Education - SUNEDU, 2021). To address that gender imbalance, this research focuses on how female students in STEM careers construct their career decision-making process. From a gender perspective, and following a qualitative approach, this study delves into female students’ narratives to identify factors at the individual, family, educational, social, and cultural levels that may impact positively the construction of their vocation. To support the findings of this study, there is an examination of a sample of male students pursuing STEM careers. The analysis shows that factors at the family level are more important in the career decision-making process in the construction of a STEM vocation. Moreover, while female students question gender stereotypes related to women’s lack of intellectual skills, it goes unchallenged stereotypes related to motherhood and care practices.
