The present research work seeks to prove that the apology of pain within the pedagogical practice in dance negatively influences the health of the body of dance students in America in a way that seeks the forced adaptation of the dancer’s body. This, in order that the corporality of the dancers complies with certain parameters and physical aesthetic ideals that are related to a specific technique, and affects the dancer’s self-image at the same time. Therefore, the question that guides this research is: How does the apology of pain within dance pedagogical practice influence the health of the body of dance students in America during the last decades? Thus, in the first instance, the historical, social and cultural context in which the “apology“ of pain arises will be reviewed, with the intention of evidencing its existence within the dance pedagogical practice and its negative influence on the health of the dancers' bodies. Next, we will proceed to analyze how the forced adaptation of the corporality of the dancers, within the pedagogical spaces, is given to the physical aesthetic patterns and ideals that are held within dance and consequently, how they influence the perception of the dancer’s self-image. All this is considering classical dance as a central example for this research.
