The word “discipline“ has multiple connotations and understandings; in the social sciences it is conceived as a regulatory force or group of norms - legal and moral - that guarantee the coexistence of individuals within a society. In the field of education, on one side, it has been understood as a form of control exercised over the behavior of students and, on the other side, as a group of strategies that seek to favor their integral development. In dance education, discipline is particularly relevant because its presence in the dancer's life is what will sustain his or her work and goals. Frequently, this concept is attributed a conservative understanding, characteristic of classical dance, which does not necessarily apply to other techniques and spaces where professional dance training is offered. For this reason, the present research seeks to understand the conceptions about discipline of six Peruvian dancers who currently work as teachers and who evolved at a time when dance training took place -mostly- in conservatories and schools, and not in institutions of higher education as it does today. From the analysis of their trajectory and conceptions of the discipline, it is interesting to observe how these professionals have preserved certain ideals in their artistic and educational practice that are directly related to this and other important concepts such as passion, commitment and freedom. This in turn has led to new understandings about the education and practice of dance that have emerged throughout their teaching career. This study seeks to contribute to the investigation of issues concerning contemporary dance in our context, for the sake of its continued dissemination in the professional field.
