Waste management is a pending challenge in the cities worldwide, especially in those that seek to be a sustainable. In Latin American cities, around 50% of waste is organic, requiring special treatment to avoid rapid decomposition in the urban area and subsequent negative impacts on environment, society, and economy. Lima is one such city, and due to its geographic characteristics and political fragmentation, it has disjointed management systems with substantial differences in efficiency between districts. This study examines the adjoining districts of Santiago de Surco and San Juan de Miraflores, which show significant differences in access to quality of waste management services, and where spatial inequalities result in demostrable complications for citizens. The research seeks to characterize and comparatively analyze the differences in waste management systems in the two districts focusing on organic waste. Quantitative indicators of efficiency of the systems, based on statistics, interviews and surveys of social actors, are evaluated. This method aims to propose solutions inspired by circular economy and urban metabolism approaches currently used in local initiatives, such as B Corps and socio environmental ventures. Following these models could significantly reduce the socio environmental problems related to waste, as well generate job opportunities and dimish impacts of inequality in the study area.
