The thesis seeks to understand under what moral and ontological assumptions the awajún residents of Santa María de Nieva perceive the management of power by the local catholic church, linked to its NGOs and the formed indigenous “elite”, about which various rumors circulate. To do this, a historical review, an ethnographic approach and the field of political anthropology and rumor are used. It is concluded that the constitutive elements for the creation of rumors are crossed by i) an ethic based on “distribution” among their own by those who have better resources, which is not perceived on actions of the church nor the indigenous “elite”; as well as ii) accusations of witchcraft as mechanisms of social control to avoid the accumulation of power and the study of medicinal plants promoted by some Jesuits, within the framework of an ontology that justifies the danger that this entails, associated with shamanic powers. These are framed in a historical context where the catholic church played a key role in the formation of indigenous leadership and organizations for local development, as well as in a current context of poverty and urban deprivation, and intensive presence of capitalism.
