The mining of digital assets is a digital process where high-performance computing equipment is linked to a specific network to solve high-complex math operations, to be able to validate trading transactions (buy and sell) among users. Once the transactions are validated, the entire block is added to the main blockchain. As a result, the owners of the computing systems get a reward for the work done in the same currency system. It’s important to mention that this complex process is energy-intensive, so computing equipment requires a reliable and high- demand source of power. In this context, the miners are required to have access to energy providers or sources that can supply electricity at competitive prices, so the production costs of digital mining can be minimized. This fact represents a restriction for the current operations of Tecnomine which is a Peruvian company involved in the cryptocurrencies industry, due to limitations on the power supply capacity in its plant. Likewise, this industry is frequently qualified as a high-risk business because of the volatility of these assets, so the finance sources are limited to support the operation's growth. For that reason, three scenarios to develop a modular BTC mining plant were analyzed to allow the expansion of current Tecnomine operations. So, a financial assessment was carried out to evaluate each alternative concluding that the best option for the implementation of a 2MW BTC mining plant was the one which considered to be supplied directly from the SEIN power network through a PPA. As a result, this scenario got the best results in terms of net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) and requires less investment than scenarios 1 and 2.
