This paper studies the impact of monetary policy shocks on the volatility of the main macroeconomic variables of Peru. The empirical approach used is based vector autoregressive (VAR) model extended along two dimensions. First, the model allows for stochastic volatility, thus capturing the variation over time in the size of monetary policy shocks. Second, the model admits a dynamic interaction, through a transition equation, between the level of the variables in the VAR and the time-varying volatility of the shocks over time. The results suggest that, in Peru, monetary policy shocks contribute to reduce macroeconomic volatility. Thereby, the analysis establishes that a 100 basis points increases in the policy rate causes a decrease in GDP volatility of up to 9% in the first six months, and a reduction in inflation and exchange rate volatility, of up to 5% and 15% the first five months, respectively.
