This research was realized in Pattern Mine located in the Cajamarca city, in the development of this work, preparation and in the pits, which respect at the drilling of rocks. The research has as main objective to determine the Total Drilling Cost (TDC), which allows the optimization of this unit operation in Pattern Mine. Field tests were realized in different pits of the mine, following the schedule, without hampering or delaying the production of the mine. The equipment and tools were used drills PIT Viper 271 from brand Atlas Copco and tricone bits PDB Tools Inc. diameter 10 5/8” whose models are EX 722 (for hard ground), EX 712 (for middle ground ), EX 532 (for medium to soft ground), which is subject of this research during the year 2012-2013. To perform field tests with tricone bits, it was necessary to know the state of the main systems of these new drills, in which we were measured the air pressure and weight (pulldown), to confirm corroborate if they are able to drill with a diameter of 10 5/8”, which is the subject of study. The research analyzed and tested a random sample of twelve holes with different models of bits, that we were mentioned lines above, to determine the reduction of total cost of drilling (TDC); this was achieved with the new technologies of bits, which are more resistant to increase significantly of the penetration speed, it also adds the proper application of the drilling parameters, reducing the TDC at 21.42% and 19.45% on hard ground medium and soft respectively. Therefore, these models have been successful drills, especially on hard ground, as this has the highest cost.
