At present, there is a concern to ensure that the construction industry can reduce its negative impact on the environment, since it not only consumes a large amount of resources, but also generates waste that pollutes the environment; for this reason, the main objective of this research is to identify what is known about alternative sustainable materials used in construction projects between 2009-2018, to later define their characteristics and determine their importance in sustainable constructions and in environment. It was selected 18 documents from Google Academic, Dialnet, Redalyc, Scopus and Scielo databases, analyzing the data through a table that synthesized the information of the main findings. There is a diversity of trends and uses of alternative construction materials that are beyond incorporating new components in their development, based on the evaluation of new strategies and methods of material selection, environmental impact analysis and the evaluation of these impacts; this is based on the recycling and reuse of materials, measured by various methods, including the analysis of the life cycle.
