The objective of the present research was to describe the characteristics of the communication process in people with visual impairment when perceiving the short film with audio description Xmile, under a qualitative study type with a “single case study” design. For this purpose, the content analysis technique and the coding sheet were used as a data collection instrument to analyze twelve fragments of the audio-descriptive script of the short film. Likewise, the focused interview was used as a technique and the interview guide as a data collection instrument, being applied on a sample of four visually impaired people chosen under representative criteria. The results showed that the audio-descriptive script was encoded in compliance with the seven textuality criteria necessary for the understanding of the visually impaired. Likewise, the results of the interviews showed that the interviewees were able to decode most of the plot thanks to the proper application of the audio description spoken by the narrator. Finally, it was also shown that the perception of the subjects in the sample relied on a total of four effectiveness factors that determined their decoding-reception process.
