This research project was carried out in the Civil Engineering laboratory of the Universidad Privada del Norte in the city of Trujillo, La Libertad region in 2018. The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of quartz as a replacement for the aggregate thickness in the mechanical properties of compressive strength and translucency of a concrete of 210 kg/cm2 using the method ACI 211 for the design of mixture, the way to achieve it is by characterizing the coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and quartz, previously crushed manually, in accordance with Peruvian technical standards. As for the design of mixtures, two designs were calculated, one considering the characteristics of the stone and the other those of the quartz both with white cement. Finally, two types of specimens were prepared; cylindrical (4“ x 8“) and cubic (10 x 10 x 10 cm), which were evaluated in the tests of resistance to compression and translucency respectively based on Peruvian technical standards and different international theses in the case of translucency. This study is justified because in our country there is no research focused on the mechanical properties of translucent concrete, this allows us to know if it is feasible or not to use quartz as a replacement for the coarse aggregate in the concrete, taking into account concepts such as concrete and characterization of materials in concrete. The replacement of the coarse aggregate with the quartz was made taking into consideration the technical data sheets and previous studies carried out. The replacement of the coarse aggregate was applied in 25%, 50% and 100% The present investigation is of experimental type because the dependent variable (resistance to compression and translucency) will be influenced by the independent variable (quartz). The research design is pure experimental because quartz is manipulated in different percentages to analyze the influence it has on concrete. Among the main conclusions is that the use of quartz increases the translucency of the concrete up to 8.43% when the coarse aggregate is replaced in its entirety, however, the translucency is inversely proportional to the compressive strength, that is, the more thick aggregate is replaced its compressive strength will be reduced.
