ABSTRACT The streetlights installed in the concession area of Luz del Sur is supplied by high pressure sodium vapor lamps; these lamps consume too much power, they do not have so durable useful life comparing to the LED lamp type; on the other hand, we can mention that the color of the high pressure sodium vapor lamp for public lighting is amber, this color does not properly display the orange and red spectrum. LED lights consume about 60% less energy than conventional lamps which have approximately 100,000 hours useful life (7 times more than the traditional high pressure sodium lamps), the temperature color emitted is whiter and more pleasant to the eyes, and they do not have toxic and contaminants that can damage the environment. Illuminating the pathways with LED lamps in Lima, it is a good deal for both the environment and for electrical companies, because, although the upfront investment is high to implement this new lighting system, it can be shown that getting the upfront investment back is possible in less than three years as a result of energy saving and minimum maintenance costs. In this investment project, we propose more advantages of LED type lamps than high pressure sodium vapor lamps used as streetlights. We compared the effectiveness and efficiency of these two types of lamps; consumption of electrical energy as useful life, advantages, low environmental impact, cost of maintenance and profitability generated by its application. With it, we demonstrate that LED type lamps are the best choice for public lighting in the concession area of Luz del Sur. We started implementing our project in the district of Miraflores and that way we get information to make a justified proposal in order to change high pressure sodium vapor lamps to LED type lamps nationwide. Also, this project proposes an implement of an electronic meter with telemetry for each substation that controls a group of luminaires, for what it is used the PrimeRead software which let the meter get information in real time and control remotely turn it on or off, visualize the electrical parameters, as well, and that way detect immediately any luminaire or network failures. In this research, it was taken values required for lighting to be used in three types of roads. It is shown that a lamp 25w LED-based is an adequate replacement for a road with little traffic using 70W high pressure sodium lamps. 72W LED s is a proper replacement lamp for an avenue that uses 150w high pressure sodium lamps. Finally, 92W LED lamp would be a suitable replacement of a 250W high pressure sodium lamps used in main road. Replacing all lights, projections of prices on energy, lamps and labor show that getting the investment given back, because of the large energy saving of LED lamps display, would be in less than four years and from then on the savings would be considered profits for the electricity distribution company. Finally, the development of this investment project seeks to provide enough information for future research related to this business opportunity.
