ABSTRACT The main objective of this thesis is to improve processing and increase the profitability of a bus manufacturer through the application of Lean Manufacturing concepts and tools. A case study approach was followed using a real company. Initially, the current state of the selected company was described and evaluated with the goal of identifying issues and potential improvements in its production and management processes, including the followings. First, a Value Stream Map showed that there is work in progress (WIP) which delays the delivery time. The implementation of the Kanban and Line Balancing methodology’s will not only reduce the number of workers from 14 to 4 but the delivery time from 283 to 57 days and production time from 58 to 48 days when applying. Currently, the plant does not utilize any engineering tool to control production processes, as evidenced in the diagnosis of 5S's, which leads to not only not finding materials in the warehouse but having to buy them at a higher cost. Moreover, the cost of inventories is high, which will be controlled by applying an inventory management model called the Reorder Point System (ROP). It was also observed that the production process lacks standardization and would benefit from, a better interaction between the work areas will be needed and can be achieved by applying the Distribution Ground methodology, which could reduce the manufacturing space to 635 m2, releasing more floor space to repairs, which is another line of business for this company. The production planning and scheduling will be controlled installing a Process Control Board, which is a tool to monitor the processes and times of each station and verify that workers meet their hours. Implementing the proposed changes, our analyses suggest that the company could achieve monthly savings in the order of S / 193.530.
